Evolution of
Bunion Surgery
Modern advances in minimally invasive bunion surgery (hallux valgus surgery) techniques and technology have allowed for tiny incisions, shorter operative time, less postoperative pain, and an overall easier recovery. The main advantage of minimally invasive bunion surgery is a bunion correction with minimal disruption or trauma to the overlying skin and soft tissue.
The evolution of MIS bunion surgery has necessitated the need to develop specialised implants and instruments rather than those used for conventional open procedures. The TITANTM MIS Bunion System is designed specifically for Hallux Valgus surgery.

17% more strength in a head-to-head comparison
Tests show that the 4mm Vertex TITANTM screw can sustain 314 N, 17% higher load than an equivalent 4mm competitor device (267 N) before starting to deform 0.2%.*
*0.2% deformity is the standard way to identify the load at which a sample will no longer return to its original shape.

Deep screwdriver engagement in head
Reduces chance of stripping in harder bone
Minimal change in diameter
Minimal change in diameter between screw shaft and head to remove weak point and reduce risk of medial cortical fracture on screw head seating
Large range of screw length in 2mm intervals
Enables patient specific implant selection to maximise bone purchase
90 degree bevelled head
Ensures that implants can be buried beneath cortical surface to prevent prominence under the skin and at the same time, maintain maximal cortical purchase
3mm diameter screws
Allows largest possible screw in the metatarsal to reduce potential implant breakage
Fully threaded screws
Maximises bone purchase, especially in lower bone densities
Reduced compression across length of screw
Allow compression of the osteotomy without rotation of the metatarsal head with larger corrections

As minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques develop to treat bunions (hallux valgus), it follows that the prostheses and instruments should evolve with the procedure. Historically, implants for hallux valgus correction surgery have been borrowed from other surgeries and indications.
The TITANTM MIS Bunion system is a comprehensive set of uniquely designed instruments and implants for the minimally invasive surgical correction of hallux valgus to provide the best outcome for the patient.
The TITANTM MIS Bunion System has been specifically designed to optimise the efficiency of hallux valgus correction surgery:
- Elevator for MTP translation has an extra long handle to minimise surgeon radiation exposure
- K-wires, Drills and Burrs are included in the set for easy and quick access
- Instrument layout correlates to the surgical procedure flow to facilitate efficient instrument changes
